History - Wikipedia

LG Corporation was established as Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. in 1947 by Koo In-hwoi. In 1952, Lak Hui (ė½ķ¬) (pronounced "Lucky"; now LG Chem) became the first South Korean company to enter the plastics industry. As the company expanded its plastics business, it established GoldStar Co. Ltd. (now LG Electronics Inc.) in 1958. Both companies Lucky and GoldStar merged to form Lucky-Goldstar in 1983. GoldStar produced South Korea's first radio.[5] Many consumer electronics were sold under the brand name GoldStar, while some other household products (not available outside South Korea) were sold under the brand name of Lucky. The Lucky brand was famous for hygiene products such as soaps and HiTi laundry detergents, but the brand was mostly associated with its Lucky and Perioe toothpaste. LG continues to manufacture some of these products for the South Korean market, such as laundry detergent.
Koo In-hwoi led the corporation until his death in 1969, at which time, his son Koo Cha-kyung took over. He then passed the leadership to his son, Koo Bon-moo, in 1995. Koo Bon-moo renamed the company to LG in that year. The company also associates the letters LG with the company's tagline "Life's Good". Since 2009, LG has owned the domain name LG.com.
Koo Bon-moo died of a brain tumor on 20 May 2018. In July 2018, it was announced that Koo Kwang-mo, the nephew and adopted son of Koo Bon-moo, will be the new CEO of LG. Koo Bon-moo adopted his nephew in 2004, after losing his only son in 1994, citing "a family tradition of male-only succession".

1. Broadcasting Act

In terms of the Broadcasting Act, No 4 of 1999, as amended all retailers selling television sets are required to ensure that prospective purchasers are in possession of a valid (paid-up) TV licence before a television set may be sold to such persons. The SABC has implemented a Toll-free Television Licence Validation Line (0800 00 9704) which retailers may contact to verify the validity of a licence prior to the sale of a television set to a prospective purchaser. This document explains the process to be applied in order to determine whether or not a TV licence is valid.

2. Documentation Required

  • Copy of customer’s identity document;
  • Copy of television licence invoice or Post Office receipt (in case of new licence purchased) or a TV Licence Card;
  • In the case of a business TV licence, the full name, address details, business registration number and VAT registration number (if applicable) of the business/ company is required. Businesses are required to purchase a new TV Licence in order to buy a new TV set;
  • Current physical and postal addresses;
  • Contact numbers (home/work, cell-phone & fax, if applicable).

All contact information must be confirmed with us and updated on the TV Licences database as required.

We require that the customer has all of the relevant information when validating a licence.

3. Business TV sets

In the case of a business TV licence, the full name, address details, business registration number and VAT registration number (if applicable) of the business/ company is required to be validated before a television set or sets may be released to a prospective purchaser.

The existing licence(s) of a business must be fully paid up before additional (new) television sets may be purchased. Over and above any arrears / outstanding licence fees a business must pay full TV licence fee (R265.00) for any TV set purchased.

4. Payments

In the event of a prospective purchaser’s payments not reflecting on the TV Licences database, we are required to email a copy of the relevant receipt(s) of customer to Audience Services on 086 548 2403 in order to enable a Call Centre agent to trace and validate the payment(s) before a television set may be released to the customer.

A television licence must at all times be fully paid-up in order to be valid.

5. Exports (Sale to Foreign Citizens)

A foreign citizen or any person buying a TV set or sets for export purposes is required to purchase a television licence before he/she can purchase a TV set. Once a purchaser is back in his/her home country, the SABC must be contacted to arrange for a refund.

The request for a refund must be done in writing to the SABC together with the required supporting documents. The required documents are a valid receipt, a copy of the page in the passport that reflects the movement between the two countries, a copy of the airplane tickets (if applicable) and their bank account details. Refunds will be subject to Foreign Exchange controls.

6. Purchasing of a TV Set for Another Person

Anyone purchasing a television set on behalf of another person must provide his/her own valid TV licence at the time of purchase. Such purchaser is, however, required to ensure that the recipient of said television set has a valid (paid-up) TV licence. No one is allowed to purchase a television set on presentation of another person’s TV licence.

If a television set is being purchased on behalf of a business enterprise by a representative, the purchaser’s full details must be captured.
