How much electricity does a hair dryer consume?

One question we get asked a lot here at Tech Guy SA is how much electricity certain appliances use. This can be useful when trying to figure out how long backup power will last during loadshedding. We will do some tests with everyday appliances using a wattmeter to measure power consumption. These tests will also allow us to calculate how much it will cost to run each appliance in your household.

For today’s test, we will use the following devices.

    • Red Pole Energy Wattmeter.
    • Xiaomi Ionic hair dryer.
      • Rated voltage: 220V~
      • Rated frequency: 50Hz.
      • Rated power: 1800W.
    • R2.98 incl. VAT per unit.

We used the hair dryer for about 30 minutes on the highest heat setting with the concentrator attachment. During the 30 minutes, the hair dryer consumed 1620W.
This means that the hairdryer costs R2.41 for the 30 minutes it was used.

We’ll be running these tests every week, so keep checking back to see what device is coming next.
